A sign that was installed well will survive a decade of Canadian weather — but only if someone pays attention to it in the summer months, when heat and sun do their most visible damage. What Heat and UV Actually Do to Signage
Ultraviolet light is the quiet killer. It breaks down the pigment in vinyl graphics and painted faces, which is why old signs fade from rich red to pink. Acrylic faces yellow and become brittle after years of sun exposure, and laminated vinyl edges can curl and peel when the adhesive bakes in direct sun. Heat itself is just as hard on components: dark-coloured cabinets can reach surface temperatures well above 60°C on a sunny GTA afternoon, which stresses LED drivers, ballasts and gaskets. That’s why signs on south- and west-facing facades — the sides that take the afternoon sun — always show wear first.
The Summer Maintenance Checklist
You don’t need a technician for most of this. A 15-minute walk-around once a month will catch the problems before they turn into repair bills:
- Inspect gaskets and seams — heat cycles cause rubber gaskets to dry out and crack. Water that gets into a cabinet is what kills LED modules and transformers.
- Check vinyl edges — run a finger along the edges of lettering and graphics. Lifting or curling edges need attention before moisture gets underneath.
- Look for fading and discolouration — compare the sign to its original colour. If the face looks chalky or the paint is dulling, it’s time to talk about refinishing.
- Clear vents and weep holes — cabinets need airflow to shed heat. Blocked vents turn an illuminated sign into an oven.
- Watch for warping — bowed faces, sagging awnings and wavy flex faces all point to heat damage.
- Listen for buzz or flicker — LED drivers that whine or lights that flicker in heat are early warning signs of failure.
Cleaning the Right Way
Dirt acts like a blanket that traps heat and accelerates UV damage, so a clean sign is a longer-lived sign. Use a soft cloth or sponge with mild soapy water — never a pressure washer, which forces water behind faces and through gaskets. Rinse with a hose, not a jet. For acrylic faces, skip ammonia-based glass cleaners; they cause crazing (fine cracks) over time. A dedicated plastic polish or a mild detergent is safer. And clean in the morning or evening: washing a hot sign with cold water can shock the acrylic and cause it to crack.
When Heat Uncovers Bigger Problems
Some summer issues are symptoms of an installation problem rather than routine wear. If an illuminated sign keeps tripping breakers in July but behaves in spring, suspect undersized wiring or a failing driver cooking in the cabinet — that’s an ESA-level electrical concern and worth a professional look. Similarly, if your vinyl is peeling in large sheets rather than at the edges, the original installation likely used the wrong adhesive or an improperly prepped surface. Heat doesn’t create these faults; it exposes them. Catching them mid-summer beats discovering them in October, when a faded, peeling sign greets your busiest retail season.
