Illuminated Cabinet Signs: Lightbox Options for Your Business

An illuminated cabinet sign — commonly called a lightbox or sign box — is one of the most effective investments a business can make. It works around the clock, turns your storefront into a landmark after sunset, and signals that your doors are open for business. From fast-food chains to medical clinics, pharmacies to auto shops, the illuminated cabinet sign has earned its place as the workhorse of commercial signage. This guide walks through the main options, materials, and costs so you can choose the right lightbox for your location.

What Is an Illuminated Cabinet Sign?

A cabinet sign is a self-contained box: an aluminium frame with a translucent face, lit from within by LED modules. The result is an evenly glowing sign that shows your logo, name, or message clearly in daylight and at night. Because the sign is fully enclosed and weatherproofed, it suits outdoor mounting on building facades, freestanding posts, or as the top section of a pylon sign.

Two questions decide most cabinet sign projects: what the face is made of, and how it is lit.

Face Materials: Acrylic vs. Polycarbonate vs. Flexible Face

  • Acrylic faces — the classic choice. Rigid, crystal-clear, and available in any colour. Acrylic gives the sharpest, most even glow and holds up well for years. It is best for smaller signs (under about 8 feet long) where rigidity matters.
  • Polycarbonate faces — virtually unbreakable and a smart pick for signs mounted low, near parking lots, or anywhere vandalism or impacts are a risk. Slightly softer light output than acrylic, but far tougher.
  • Flexible faces (vinyl tension faces) — stretched over a metal frame, used on the big signs you see at gas stations and highway plazas. For most storefronts this is overkill, but if you need a very large illuminated sign, it is the economical route.

In the GTA, acrylic is the default for most storefront lightboxes, with polycarbonate recommended whenever the sign is within reach of carts, snowplows, or foot traffic.

LED Lighting: The Modern Standard

Older lightboxes used fluorescent tubes — heavy, fragile, and prone to flicker in cold weather. Modern signs use LED modules, which change the economics of illuminated signage:

  • LEDs use roughly 50–70% less electricity than fluorescent lighting of equal brightness.
  • LED modules rated for outdoor use last 50,000+ hours — often a decade or more of nightly operation.
  • They start instantly in cold weather, which matters during Toronto winters.
  • Maintenance is simpler: if one module fails, a technician replaces a small puck rather than the whole lamp assembly.

Every illuminated sign installed in Ontario must be inspected by the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA). A reputable sign shop handles the permit and inspection as part of the job — ask about it before you sign a contract.

Cabinet Sign Options Worth Knowing

Beyond the basic box, there are several variations to consider:

  • Double-sided cabinet signs — ideal for island or median placements where traffic approaches from both directions.
  • Reverse-lit (halo) faces — the face is solid aluminium with cut-out letters that glow, giving an upscale, architectural look popular with banks and law firms.
  • Dimmable or timed lighting — some municipalities restrict overnight illumination; a timer or photocell keeps you compliant and saves power.
  • Colour-changing LED — lets you switch the glow for holidays or promotions, though it costs more and needs zoning approval in many areas.

What Does a Lightbox Cost in Toronto?

Pricing depends on size, face material, and mounting. As a realistic range for the GTA: a small 2 x 4 foot single-faced acrylic cabinet runs roughly $1,200–$2,500 installed; a larger 4 x 8 foot storefront cabinet typically lands between $2,500 and $5,500, depending on lettering style, mounting height, and electrical work. Double-sided and custom-shaped boxes cost more. Always get an itemized quote — a good shop breaks out fabrication, electrical, permits, and installation separately.

Before You Order: Permits and Landlord Approval

In Toronto and most surrounding municipalities, an illuminated sign requires a sign permit before installation. Sizes, illumination, and even whether a sign may be lit are regulated by local by-laws — the City of Toronto, Vaughan, Markham, and Mississauga all have their own rules. If you lease your space, you will also need written landlord approval. Your sign company should check by-laws and handle applications as part of the quote; if a shop never mentions permits, treat that as a red flag.
